Habror mist was painted in a different mode than many of the artists other works. In this case, the artist made up a dish of grays by simply cleaning the palette to obtain a pale gray mixture: satisfyingly weak in color. First washes were applied over the entire surface, with very subtle lights and darks in the background. By gradually approaching the foreground, successive washes of the same mixture produced the desired depth.
